New York (CNN) – Hours after the exemption of the costs of the United States expired on Friday, the Chinese Electronic Commerce Site Temu announced that it reviewed its shipping model, sending all US sales sellers.
“All sales in the United States are now controlled through local distributors, with orders full of the interior of the country,” said Temu spokesman on Friday. “Temu has actively recruited American distributors to succeed on the platform. “
Change is a primary replacement for the platform. Temu, and other Chinese electronic commerce sites such as Shein and Aliexpress, in the past they had used exemption minimis, as we know, to flood the United States of products at ultra basic costs. And while the president of the United States, Donald Trump, says he needs his new costs to assist production to the United States, Temu resolution shows how giant corporations can escape this call and see other tactics.
The minimis failure allowed the goods of the goods to value $ 800 or less enter the United States as a franchise of rights, inspections of jumps and long documents. Chinese electronic commercial sites have undoubtedly taken the maximum merit of the exemption, flooding the US market with ultra lobes products. But with Trump applying punishment costs for all Chinese imports, millions of Americans who have become dependent on these sites can locate those less affordable assets.
The vast majority of Shein and Temu products are manufactured in China and matter to the United States, so costs are so cheap.
The new jargon of the Temu corporations would possibly seem to be in Trump alley. But it is not because a product is sent to consumers of a “local warehouse” that is manufactured in the United States.
Sites like Temu and Shein have been building their portfolio of American warehouses for years to reduce shipping times. Last year, the Biden administration also began to criticize the exemption of Minimis, the Chinese sender feeling a transparent replacement of the atmosphere.
Shein started buying products, bulk shipping in American stores last year, said Chris Tang, a global control professor at the University of California origin at Los Angeles.
Bloomberg reported in February that Temu had to check its Chinese source chain, asking supplier factories to send bulk parts to US stores. When those articles are exhausted, it is not transparent if they will remain exhausted for US consumers, or if the new pieces will be the subject of the costs Trump has put in China.
For now, that means foreign-made products are arriving on Americans’ doorsteps through US distributors. Temu does not publicly list its manufacturer partners.
Tang said on Friday that if there are shortages, Temu has few options. The company could re-order its products, which would cost time and money. The site could begin to offer “substitutes,” or recommendations of similar products in stock. Or, it could raise prices.
Temu already began raising prices last week.
Temu says on its website there are no import charges or extra costs on delivery for items purchased from local warehouses. On social media, users say items are already out of stock.
One user on Reddit noted that on Friday, about 60 of the items in their cart were suddenly unavailable.
Some Temu items are not available locally, another user noted, writing that their digital cart of more than 300 items dwindled to two. On top of that, the user said an additional fee was applied unless a “local order” totaled at least $30.
“Temu is gone! What I saw today completely convinced me!” they wrote. “Local sellers, despite obviously buying some items in advance in a bulk, don’t have all these items I was interested in.”
